My FWD 4000S made the same noise from the front when the control arm
bushings went bad.
When I was going steady state in any gear, then blipped the throttle, it
made a dull thunk through the body.
Raise the car up, see if you can move the control arms back and forth or
front to back. There might be a little play, due to the rubber bushings,
but there shouldn't be a massive amount. If they are bad, you'll know
what I mean. The whole wheel/suspension assembly would rock back and
forth when mine went bad.
