Things to look for in a used 5K

Hello all!


Let me preface this by saying that if this has be discussed before, please 
E-Mail me privately to avoid wasting bandwidth.  I am currently looking
to purchase a used European (German or Swedish) sedan.  Having owned several
VW's and been happy with them, I am attracted to the 5000's low prices 
as compared to BMW's Volvo's etc.  I was hoping that some of you could
tip me off to some potential trouble spots/things to look for and perhaps
make some general comments on the car's reliablity.  I would also appreciate
a comparison with the 4000's since I would also consider that as an option.

P.S.  I have been considering cars in the $4K - 5K range which in my part of 
the world would buy me a 86-88 5000 with less than 100K miles.....
