I think the Bentley book mentioned this. Never got around to look into this.

My '86 VW GTI still has the filter (I bought new, and I'll its sole servant),
but I thought I had to replace that part with a non-filtered fitting. The
times I changed the main fuel filter, I always forgot to buy that (dealer-
only) part (don't like to break into the fuel system too often- Murphy
might see an opportunity ;) ). 

So, thanks to your detailed posts, I can get off my rump and "make it right".
