ummm...not necessarily so. On my '87 4kcsq, I had a custom receiver hitch
fabricated from a class iii truck system. On trucks, the receiver tube is
normally horizontal pointing aft; for the quattro, it pointed down and
slightly forward. The hitch frame was bolted in between the body and the
rear bumper mounts (this was what caused most of the custom work)
The ball mount was fabricated from solid stock long enough to clear the rear
valence panel, then a drawbar welded to the stock came up to bring the hitch
ball to the right height. When the ball mount was removed, you couldn't tell
the car had a hitch system on it.
Is it strong? I towed a 2400# boat with this setup. Any RV shop doig custom
chassis work should be able to do this for you. Cost me about $300 back in
