Re: Amsoil
I guess what I'm afraid of is what has happened in the rec.autos.* where
person talks about product A (with more interest than casual reply) and
bashes product B and C, either very subtly or trashes them outright. If I
wasn't experienced in whatever products discussed, I would probably be very
confused because the information supporting the claims will be very
biased (Slick-50 comes to mind now...) without me knowing.
By being a dealer, he/she will probably receive more information on the
products than average dude/dudess will be able to. But just how much that
information is really true? Will the comparison tests in those
information be totally unbiased (if there are such comparisons)?
I probably won't mind product being advertised (but don't put out an ad
everyday, for example), especially if someone is offering the product for
there's-no-tomorrow price (hey, there's a good thought! ;). What I really
would hate to see is having dealer's supplied-information-from-manufacturer
turning into that person's own opinion!
The manufacturer's supplied info can be an excellent insight to something
that may have pondered people for a while. But if it's used in the reply (no
matter in what form or purpose), please say so. I think the issue here is
credibility. Mfrs' claims should be met with skepticism (afterall,
they're trying to sell things to us with those claims to backup whatever
they say is "new and improved"), and their words shouldn't be the last
word (if that's true, then we all have "old and obsolete" up to our
necks) -- and those claims shouldn't become your own opinion (unless you
have successfully replicated the comparison test, etc.) or your
(hypothetical, cleverly though-up) experience!!
I think there are several "dealers" here subscribed to the list, so I guess
what I want to say is -- please use mfr's info with discretion. If that's
done, then I have no problem with this whole kitten kaboodo (and please
do keep the sales pitch to a minimum) about advices.
