Thanks for the information, Eric.  It's fascinating stuff.

I was talking to a salesman at an Audi dealer here and he says
that there is a serious problem with smugglers buying up U.S.
model Audis and shipping them to other countries for sale at
a huge profit.  Audi prices are comparatively low in the U.S.
compared to many other countries, and U.S. Audi models tend
to be far more luxuriously equipped than the standard models
elsewhere.

If this were true, then it might partially explain why we see so
few new Audis on the road in the U.S., despite sales figures.
