According to a magazine article I read a long time back (I quote 
magazines a lot, don't I?) AWD implies a full-time four wheel drive 
system, while 4WD implies a part-time system (you can shift into and 
out of four wheel drive).

And you can stick that $0.02  in your pipe and smoke it.  I don't 
recommend it though.  :-)
