Re: audi 5000 tranny seal problems

It isn't hard, but get the Bentley manual, it is essential. You will
also need a small (10 Ton) hydraulic press, like the one that Harbor
Freight sells for about $120.00. It is best to steam clean the tranny,
etc., before pulling it, then clean it carefully before dissassembly -
you need to be very careful about getting any dirt inside. If you
have the press, it is a piece of cake, but exercise normal care for
a project that takes so much labor if you screw up.

You will also need:

a good collection of "round objects". i.e., old bearing races, pieces
of pipe, 3/4" drive sockets, etc. These are for pressing in the new
seals.

an inside micrometer, to check the bushing in the torque converter

a torque wrench

a hydraulic jack with a 12" square piece of plywood to support
the tranny when you pull it.

a piece of steel or pipe to support the front end of the engine

some high quality crankcase joint sealer (for the front pinion bearing
cover)

A few tricks to avoid problems;

find some 10 mil or so soft plastic to make a cone to slide the
pinion shaft rear seals over the edge of the sealing surface on
the pinion shaft

use a center punch to mark the side covers for the stub axles, so you
can correctly reinstall them with the right amount of preload on the
differential bearings

use an oil "sucker" with a narrow tip to remove the atf from the
torque converter.
