Synthetics & Clatter

Here's a question that seems to bridge the discussions of
synthetics and valve train clatter. Autocrossing my '90 90Q20V
always brings about clatter after each approx 1 min run keeping
the revs above 4000 and touching 7000 in second on the
straights. I then take a cruise around the mall parking lot and
the clatter dies away in a few minutes.

I've only noticed this using Mobil1 5W30. A VW/Audi mech
suggested that at high temp the oil just runs right out of the
hydraulic lifters, since they've got about 80k kilometers.

Aside from doing the obvious expensive experiment and replacing
the lifters, what do the Audi/Lubricant cognoscenti suggest?
