... no flames coming from me! ... I concur with your observation. I've
been told the same thing about the gear breaking and I am convinced that
it is BS ... the other bit of BS is the fact that you can't buy replace-
ment gears, you must have the speedo serviced by a licensed VDO repair
station. Who knows how far out of whack that odo's gonna be if you do
the repair yourself! You don't have the proper calibration tools! ;-)

I believe that Paul is talking about R/R ing the speedo on his qtc. The
procedure for removal of the speedo on this car is a piece of cake ...

1) remove the two screws that hold the I/C cover down.
2) pull the sides of the I/C cover away from the cluster, then lift the
cover and pull it toward you.
3) Disconnect the plugs on the back of all of the I/C switches. Headlight,
emergency flasher, rear window defogger, etc. It might be a good oppor-
tunity to replace that small lamp that illuminates the headlight switch ...
4) Disconnect the speedo cable ... If you're having problems accessing the
back of the speedo, disconnect it at the OXS elapsed mileage box in the
air plenum shelf under the hood.
5) Remove the two screws that attach the I/C to the dash. Disconnect the
electrical connections for the cluster and remove the two lamp sockets
and the connection for the cruise control that plug directly into the
cluster. Remove the vacuum line for the boost gauge (and disconnect
the speedo cable if you didn't do it in step 4).
6) The speedo is screwed directly into the I/C. You may need to move the
flexible pc board around a little to get the thing out.

Assembly is pretty much the reverse procedure. The one thing to be care-
ful for is to make sure that you have plugged the lights into the proper
locations for the idiot lights ...
