BACK-UP LIGHTS NOT WORKING

A friend in need is a friend indeed (correct me if I'm misquoting, but the
sentiment is correct).

My 86 4kCSQ has no back-up lights. I believe we have concluded that the
fault lies in the switch attached/part of the transmission. Easy enough.
However there are two identical switches on the tranny. I changed the
lower one (with the help of Meineke's lift), only to learn it was not the
correct one. The other one (presumably the correct aka broken one) is
well hidden. Did I mention that the exhaust pipe is in the way? Has anyone
had any similar experiences? Any ideas how to access without removing
transaxle or unbolting the exhaust?

Maybe I need new exhaust bolts as some have mentioned (ticking noise) and
I can have it all done together. This is BIG unknown.

Also, the Meineke operator (pun intended) tried to sell me a new catyltic
converter because mine (170k mi) is loose inside and could break off a
small piece of the innards and damage the muffler. Anybody shed any light
on this? I think he was being an "operator" and wanted $$$$.

Thanks,
