I agree with Eliot.  As an audiophile, it would be totally counter 
productive for me to evaluate an audio component in only one system.  Say 
I was looking to buy a new amplifier (the "engine" of an audio system), 
and I was buying solely on the basis of sound quality.  If I only 
evaluated the amplifier in one system, I don't have a complete picture 
of that amp's sound, because the rest of the system's components' sounds 
are interfering.  Only by evaluating the amp in a variety of systems can 
you accurately determine the sound of that amp.  Why should it be 
different for engines, or tires, or any number of things.  While it isn't 
practical to swap engines from car to car, that's what needs to be done 
to get a clear picture of the engine's performance.  Its the designer's 
job to try the engine in a variety of situations to see that it makes his 
criteria.
