The mile markers aren't always accurate, either.  In college, my roommate
worked for the Indiana Highway Department during summer break and told me
that +/- 100' (+/- ~2%) was about as accurate as they ever got.  Only the
official "speedometer check" markers were considered to be truly accurate
and he claimed those were still +/- 20-25' at best.
