I do not have an Audi V8 (I have a 1990 100) but the original owner
replaced the radio with another Audi radio. This has the same setup
as yours.

If I remember correctly, the Bass and Treble buttons need to be depressed
slightly and they pop out so that I can control the Bass and Treble. To 
adjust the fader I then pull towards me the bass button and it clicks 
out into the fader control.

I'm not sure if this will work for you but it does for me per my
instructional manual and experience.
