Sounds like a possible O2 sensor acting up, or Idle stabilizer valve.  I
fought with my FI for over 2 weeks - same symptoms, esspecially the surging
and barely running at idle.  It goes into a "limp mode" as described in the
Haynes FI manual ($12.00 about anywhere).  Remote possibility would be the
"frequency (Lamda) valve".  Try tweaking the richness up (3 mm long allen -
clockwise - have to remove aluminum plug w/sheet metal screw) and it'll work
in manual mode til you can replace O2 sensor.  Don't go more than 1/4 turn at
a time tho...

O2 sensor is $100.00+ for the plug in type, 50-70.00 Bosch universal (solder
in).  Sensor is right in front of the Airbox, by the Turbo
