5k Steering Grinding Solved

Thanks to several folks who replied directly, the problem is fixed.

There is a splined collar on the lower end of the steering shaft,
that holds the shaft onto the steering rack. This collar is located
over the brake / clutch pedals right up at the firewall.

Mine wasn't tightened adequately when the rack was replaced earlier
this summer - and it had pulled away from the rack about 3/8". The
steering rod is spring loaded, to push away from the rack - so when
I had the steering wheel off the other day I must have pulled on the
steering rod enough to cause it to slip toward me a bit; which then
resulted in grinding noises and the feeling that something was
interfering with the steering wheel. Argh!
