High Idle

I have a problem with my '88 80q - it idles at 2200rpm. This just started a few
days ago. I looked in the archives and found a message that someone posted
about a 5K with a high idle ~2200rpm. When he disconnected the idle stabilizer
it dropped to back to normal. (Sorry I didn't save the text or author). This
is what is happening with mine. There was no replies for this message so here
goes.

The ECS would come on from time to time prior to the high idle. There is a
thermosistor on the top of the goose neck on the head. Does this go to the ECU?
I am assuming it does because when I pull the connector the ECS check light
comes on. Then the high idle and the ECS check light comes on much more often.
I think this may be the cause of my problem because I have tested this
thermosistor hot and cold and it seems to be open all the time. This is an Audi
part ($100.00) so I don't want to replace it if I don't need to. Does anyone
have specs to test this? I have pulled the stabilizer and it's clean and
doesn't seem to be sticking anywhere. I also pulled the throttle body and
cleaned it. I don't think it's a vacuum problem because pulling the plug on the
stabilizer sets it back to normal and I have done the old spray all the vacuum
lines. It shouldn't be the ECU - the previous owner replaced it about 2 months
ago. Doesn't a bad ECU almost always cause a no-start? I am trying to get in
touch with the previous owner to find out when, where and why this was replaced
(hopefully tonight). Is there anything I am missing?

I still haven't found a bentley manual for my car so I don't know where to look
next.

On the personalized plates, how about:
HAUDI
TQC12B (just a variation)
THX CBS
I saw a woman in DC driving a MB 500SEC with "WAS HIS"

Thanks
