Dead Clutch, Idle etc.

Thanks to those who offered the advice on the dead pedal
question on my former (wifes current) 5000S. Here's the update,
as promised.

Well, I checked the clutch cylinder, and it was binding,
took it apart, looks like the piston was cocking itself
into a binding position sometimes, so trashed it and
installed a new one. I wasn't going to do the clutch
just yet, but there was a special on them at the
dealer ($125.00 for clutch, pressure plate, bearing
and alignment tool). It was easier than I thought it
would be.

Had it all together by 3PM, so I got enthusiastic and
decided to tackle some other long neglected items, such
as cap, rotor, valve cover gasket, etc.etc.

I WAS NOT however ready to shell out the $170 for
a new Idle Control Relay (to get that pesky idle
down in the triple digits) so here's what I did
for a fix, may come in handy for others who will
experience this problem sooner or later.

The center console has four empty slots with dummy
caps on them, I removed two and found an ON-OFF
switch that would fit. NOTE, the switch must
keep the circuit closed until you push it, so it works
closed-open-closed. I found an old Porsche window
switch that worked by didn't fit the hole, so I settled
for a BMW rear defogger switch that fit perfectly.
I then cut the Black and Yellow spotted (not striped)
wire that goes into the idle control (under the
drivers kick panel, to the left) and spliced in the
switch.
Works great! The car starts right up, when the idle
starts to climb, I just hit the switch for a few seconds,
the idle comes right down to normal. It also maintains
normal idle speed when the compressor comes on for the
AC/Defrost.

Total Cost: Nothing moneywise (had this stuff kicking around)
and about half hour of time.

BUT, the absolute strangest thing happened after all
this....the lifters stopped making noise. I don't
believe it myself, I didn't even change the oil!
It's downright spooky, but I guess Audi's probably
do have a soul...(it was/has been LOUD since I bought
the car many moons ago).

BCNU, and thanks again to those who answered my post.
