The rapid cycle of the AC is probably due to low freon pressure in your
system - the AC system works continuously in my 87 5KCSTQ except for ECON.
 I'm low on freon (just barely out of the Audi spec, too) and mine cycles the
same way you describe.  Its cycling on the low pressure switch ('course it
could also be a high press problem due to clooging @ expansion vlv).  The
problem with this is the rapid cycling can 1)wear out your clutch and 2) send
pressure surges through your system (never good - knocks corrosion products
loose and mucks things up - in nuke parlance we call that a crud burst...).
