Back in the "good" ole days when I lived in the Toronto area and regularly
drove on snow, and before that in Montreal driving on even more snow, I
found a tremendous difference between new tires and well worn tires. This
was especially apparent trying to stop in slush.

I found summer tires fine on ice and workable on snow and slush until the
tread got too shallow. Once that happened, they were treacherous.
