i think someone already pointed out subtle differences between GTCC
and DTM.  the v8 was raced in GTCC.

audi wanted to use a flat plane crankshaft, one where two opposite
cylinders share an adjacent plane on the crank.  this has power
implications but it was banned.  i know very little else on
the details of the dispute.  anybody care to fill in?
