     Just the opposite! In the  '70s Audi wanted a sports car, and hired
     Porsche to design it for them. It used existing Audi parts when
     possible, of course, Audi engine, etc. Then the VAG merger occurred
     and it was decided that Audi  did not want to build the puppy. Porsche
     needed to fill its entry level line, and bought back the design,
     and production started as the 924. As time when on, Porsche eliminated
     the Audi engine, and the 924 became the 944....

I believe it was designed, rather than manufactured, by Audi.
