that's why it is a cop out to just say, "let's not worry about the
weight, because the dumb americans are never going to know any
better."  of course there's no such thing as a free lunch.
engineering is all about finding the best possible tradeoff between
conflicting demands.

and that's why i consider the rx7 a great achievement.  i have to
confess that i've not driven the rx7 so i don't know how much
structural stiffness is lacking.  but what i'm sure about is that the
engineers went to extreme lengths to cut the pork.  that is what i
applaud.  if they went too far there is grounds for criticism, but the
original premise of "let's see how light we can make this car" is 100%
sound.

the vr4 shows absolutely no evidence of this attitude in its design.
it was never intended for somebody who appreciates such subtleties in
design.  and that's why i am bashing it (and having a good time too!)
