Simply put, Bob (damn... just how many Bobs do we have on the list?), is 
that abbreviating "Japanese" into "Jap" was simply a bad choice knowing 
the word "Jap" has meaning onto itself. I think the closest thing of 
abbreviating "Japanese" I have ever come upon is "Jp" (I think this is 
also the same as those oval stickers some people stick on back of their 
vehicles). I don't think I have ever seen Japanese referred as "Jap" for 
abbreviation's sake in non-demeaning tone.
