I think Audi (and others) was puzzled by apparent good sales result of 
Neon -- and now the look of new Tarus and E-Klasse. They probably took VW's 
concept 1 things and whacked it with very ugly stick.

My very original guess is that Audi wanted to take the A4 and make new 
coupe and cabriolet from it, but VW pressured Audi to base the new cars 
on more of a "global scale." Now the thing is based on A3/VW (even the 
4WD). As for style, I wouldn't be surprised if the TT/TTs will share 
either some parts, or, it uses some of the manufacturing tools with the 
up-comining new Beetle.

I guess this is suppose to attract Generation ABC-XYZ people. Not only 
those people, but people who think themselves as "at the edge of fashion 
design" but has absolutely no idea what it is.
