I have a 1984 Audi 80 quattro that would not select 5th or reverse when 
 it was hot, and eventually it wouldn't select them at any time.  This 
 turned out to be the bracket bolted onto the gear change shaft that 
 sticks out of the gear box.  This bracket has a small (15mm) steel 
 ball riveted onto it.  The rivet had become extremely loose so that 
 the ball had about 5mm free play.  An Audi quattro mechanic told me 
 this was a common problem.
