I've got to jump in here.  I look over my shoulder before making a lane
change, because I don't believe that a glance in the mirror really does the
job.  However, before glancing, it is important to allow enough extra room
to avoid rude surprises.

I would like to think I have never been stung due to my wonderful judgement
(ya, right) but as I read about more fender benders I will undoubtedly
leave even more room next time.
