While I'm willing to accept full responsibility for not leaving enough of a
cushion in front of me, I feel compelled to point out that at this point in
the road, it really isn't possible to leave any more cushion since cars are
always driving right up to the left-lane exit and jumping into whatever gap
they can find ... as a result, your 5 or 6-car cushion quickly becomes only
2 or 3 cars or even less. If you slow down to open it back up, the process
just repeats itself.
Trust me: I've driven this road at least 250 times a year for the last five
years and the 4 or 5-car cushion I had this past Wednesday is about as good
as it ever gets. As a popular saying around Phoenix goes, "It's not IF you
ever have an accident but WHEN...". So far as odds go, 1-in-1250 isn't too
bad in my book, at least not considering the circumstances (although I will
strive to do better in the future, of course...). :^)
