new type window regulators

Did the newer type of window regulator (flex-screw drive?) for your 
86 5000CST (from Halsey) require any drilling/refitting?

My '86 5KS driver's side reg. made that signature crunching sound. Got 
the motor/cable out and hose-clamped the window up.

I would like to buy the newer type reg., but that EC article on 
retro-fitting the (4000?) made me unsure of how many new-types are out 
there, and if any are an easy drop-in.

Any buying info welcomed.
