Info on heated seats...

I apologize for the out of topic post, but does anyone know what the
heating coils in the heated seats consist of?  What type of metal is used
(and what size) and does it heat on straight 12V DC or is current modified
before it gets to the coil?

I am trying to locate an inexpensive, flexible and durable metal that will
heat under a 6-9 volt DC current.

My '82 4000 diesel doesn't have heated seats, so I can't check myself!
(That comment was only to make the post a legitimate quattro-list topic!!)
