ICY INTERIOR on a 4kCSQ

Well, my father drove my '87 4000CSQ to work today, and besides
 breaking my driver's door handle, he had another major problem.

 After starting the car, he was heading for home on the highway
 (during blizzard conditions I might add), when suddenly the
 windshield began to fog over.  The fan was not on at the time, so
 hit turned it on defrost... bad idea, SNOW came flying out of the
 vents and effectively coated ALL of the interior windows with
 ice.  He had no luck in getting it to clear up, and had to drive
 home slowly while using an ice scraper on the INSIDE of the .
 windshield!   Any ideas as to the cause of this or ways to prevent
 it?
