ed,
i had a 944 that did the same thing when it was brand new.  the dealer 
finally tracked down the problem to a bad fuse box, i.e. he finally 
removed the whole fuse box assembly and found a burned wire underneath 
where there was a bad connection in manufacture.  you might have the 
dealer look at this.
