An A/C ? - '87 5kTQ

It's pretty warm here (D.C.) now, like mid-50's. It's been sub-35 for about a
month, so my A/C hasn't tryed to come on for a while. Last time it did, it
worked, now it doesn't. The programmer is sending the signal for the
compressor to come on, but the signal stops at the low-pressure switch, which
means I'm out (low anyhow) on Freon. Does freezing weather cause freon to
escape? Maybe not being used for a month? Like I said, it worked the last
time the temp was high enough to let it. I don't really need the A/C to work,
but deforesting would be a little easier if it did I'd guess. A trip to the
local mechanic should get that sucker charged up again, but I'd like to know if
this is a typical problem, or just a slow leak in my A/C system (this happened
last winter too.) TIA!!
