1983 Audi GT

I'm a first time buyer and I found a '83 GT for $700.  The interior is in 
pretty bad condition (I found a wrecked GT at a salvage yard that I can 
strip), one of the automatic windows doesn't work, and the driver's side 
outside door handle doesn't work (the seller told me he has the 'rod' 
that fell out).  The engine looks a bit grimy - but it is an '83.  He has 
recently put new bushings, exhaust, and brakes on it.  What is the 
history with the GT's engine - How concerned should I be?  The interior 
and the other nit-pick things I can fix but I don't have a lift, etc. to 
get under the car if need be.  Is $700 a fair price?  Any comments would be 
appreciated.
