Driving event at Laguna Seca (CA)
I got a notice in the mail about a driving school that is scheduled for
the weekend of 17-18 February at Laguna Seca. The event is sponsored
by NASA (National Auto Sports association). I was wondering if there
was any interest in having a small group of q-listers attend. I have
been talking to the folks at NASA about the possibility of affiliation
of QCUSA with NASA (at least the Nor Cal chapter). The weekend event
consists of a driving school (with 4 categories) and a race series (with
5 classes).
Paraphrasing from the info sheet:
The requirements for driver and car to participate in the scool are pretty
minimal ... "Basically, all you need is a safe car and a helmet." You need
to be a member of NASA or a sanctioned club who is age 18 or older (16-18
with consent). The students are separated according to their experience
level into 4 basic groups. There are no speed limits in any group and per-
sonal attention is paid to every student. Group 1 - safety and driving line;
close supervision and passing only allowed on long straights. Group 2 - an
instructor optional group that generally allows the drivers to enjoy their
cars. Prior experience is needed to advance to this group. Passing allowed
on shorter straights. Group 3 - for the more experience racer/driver; simi-
lar to Grp 2, with the difference being greater speeds and passing includes
slower corners. Group 4 - advanced drivers, requires either a NASA racing
license or lots of experience. Good for racing practice & fine tuning of
skills; passing anywhere is allowed. Other requirements: roll bars in rag-
tops, working seat belts, state driver's license, long sleeve shirt and
pants, helmet, knowledge of the club codes and regulations. Laguna Seca has
a 92dbA sound limit (guess I gotta fix that hole in my center muffler :).
FEES:
School course entry fee - $149 (1-day), $279 (2-day)
NASA membership - $25 (may be $15 if QCUSA was a sanctioned club)
Club Codes & Regs document - $5
If you would like more information about the event, or NASA in general
the phone number is (510) 232-NASA. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who
has experience with [this] NASA, or anyone who is interested in attending ...
