Just to muddy the waters a bit further, I remember seeing a few years ago an
article on a car that Audi was marketing in Germany under the 100 badge that
was powered by what I think was a direct injection diesel. The article I read
(in one of the major auto rags) was about an exposition that Audi was putting
on showing the car breaking mileage records on an oval track. At a steady speed
of about 45MPH on the track, the car got about 40MPG, and would go almost 1000
miles on a tank of fuel. I don't think that this car was ever sold in North
America, but is probably being sold in some form in Europe.
