My 87 5KCSTQ does the same thing. I 'think' it may be bushings going bad in
my distributor, but it does seem to travel back and forth along the cam. It
does sound horrid, almost like its coming apart. As soon as I come off idle,
its completely gone. Really startled me at first - now its merely annoying
and sometimes embarrassing. ("What the heck is that?!" - Its an Audi...)
Right now its still too far down my repair list to worry about (If it ain't
broke...)
