Jeff,
Same deal when I was in school (early '80's); I drove a ratty '75 VW Scirocco, bad
CV's, paint job by Rustoleum... you get the idea.
Three theories why today's college kids are more "vehicularly enabled;"
1. Generally higher expectations. Today, every kid expects to have a car. I drove
mom's station wagon until college, now all the high school parking lots are jammed
with kid's cars. When I went to college, you had to demonstrate that you _needed_ a
car (usually via a letter from an employer) in order to keep one on campus. Now, in
many cases you don't have to prove it, and colleges are likewise jammed with cars.
2. Increased willingness to go deeply into debt for a car.
3. Extension of #1, greater willingness of parental units to "help." Cars are
increasingly seen as necessities, etc... I don't recall the original thread, but was
it clear that the" poor student" poster had bought the car himself, as opposed to a
graduation gift or mom/dad's castoff? Perhaps just a case of a wise choice of
parents? ;)
Cheers,
David
