Re: Crap & Drivel, et. al.
(Nomex snugged up tight as a precaution)
I find that a range of magazines and a healthy dose of skepticism are a
useful combination. For general information I have no problem with C&D
(juvenile), R&T (fairly factual) and Automobile (heavy lifestyle
orientation). Motort Trend seems to aim very much at the neophyte level. I
also read Consumer Reports regularly because, although it has its own heavy
bias, at least you don't see the blatant "flavor of the month" favoritism of
the commercial monthlys. Finally, stir in an occasional dose of AutoWeek for
light reading and interesting small ads.
Among the foreign press, you mentioned Performance Car. Look at CAR, from
the UK as well. It is even pricier, but it is the most erudite, if you can
stand the fact that Jaguar nearly always wins the big comparisons against the
German luxury sedans. Top Gear (UK) is of the smart-ass-young-journalist
persuasion, but an interesting read. There are also a number of good German
magazines, but the language barrier and very limited US distribution makes
them less accessable.
Bottom line is to read whatever pleases you and think for your self.
