In U.S. where gas is cheap and places are So Far Apart, most people here 
sees cars as appliance. In most other places where gas and cost of 
ownership of a car is high, the car is seen as more than an appliance -- 
it's some sort of prestige, that it BETTER to be enjoyable with gas 
prices so high! (Ever filled a compact Japanese car and found yourself 
$60 lighter wallet?)
