A3 UNDISGUISED
  Set for release in '96, Audi is preparing the smallest model ever built
since the Audi 50 ended production 18 years ago. The so-called A3 will be
based on the next-gen VW Golf, but is expected to be more luxurious and
better equipped. Available, at first, as a two-door with a large rear door
and, about a year later, also as a five-door model. The new front- drive A3
will be offered with either a five-gear stick or a five-speed automatic
trans. Power comes from different 4-cyl fuel engines and two diesel engine.

CVT 4 A6?
  Audi engineers are testing a cont. variable trans that is expected to
appear on the replacement for the A6, which is codenamed E5 and due at the
Geneva show in 1997.
  The A6--the fifth generation of the former 100--shares its basic platform
and suspension with the A4, and the new VW Passat due out later this year;
structural changes provide a slight increase in wheelbase. It will be
offered in both front- and 4WD, and buyers can opt for the new stepless CVT
trans on most engines, including the 192-HP, 30V, 2.8L V6 recently unveiled
in the current model. Following its launch on the A6, the Audi CVT will
likely work its way to other Audi models.

S6 APPEAL
  What a difference a letter makes. The Audi S6 wagon brings back a performance
package that's thought to beat: a 20V turbocharged 5 with 227HP, taut
suspension, nicely weighted steering and a lovely turbo hum over 3000 RPM.
But some here think the shifter is sloppy, and most think, at $48K, it is
way too expensive. (AWD 911 bi-turbos are WAY to expensive too! Ed.)
