That's right, Glen. Part of oil wear is evaporation of the more
volatile "parts" due to heat and wear. Provided that no fuel or
other thinning contaminants enter, it is normal for viscosity to
change slightly - and thickening is logical.
(You knew the next comment was coming...)
NOTE: one advantage of synthetics is that they are much less prone to
viscosity change, because the volatile "parts" (tempted to say
"elements" but I might get a BZZZZZZZZT from Bob Myers, so I'll stay
with generic "parts") do NOT volatize as easily. I'm sure this is
common to most synthetics, but I have seen very specific tests and
literature from Amsoil about its performance in this respect. It
blows conventional oil into the weeds in this respect!
Yet another way that synthetics are superior to dino-jooce.....
