Howling 85 4000q. HELP!

My 85 4000q has recently developed a howl from the transmission.  I
originally thought it was the propeller shaft bearing midway down the shaft,
but after I took it to a mechanic, he thought the howl was coming from the
rear of the transmission.  

Being on a buisness trip until the end of the week, I have not had a chance
to get a look at the car.  Is there any common failure items at the rear of
the transmission?  If this sounds vaugely familiar to anyone, please help!
