other way around.  when the pad wears far enough, the wire breaks, opening
the circuit.  that's why when you disconnected the sensors, the warning
light went on.
if you change to some of the after market pads (no sensors), you can simply
cut the old sensor wires and twist them together (and watch that pad wear
carefully!)
