center console gauges

When I bought my GT Coupe the center gauges were missing.  In their place was
a handy pocket (from a 4KS?).  I figured the previous owner must've liked the
VDO gauges so much that he kept them.  So I bought a used gauge panel
thinking I could just plug the connectors together and --voila!  Not!! Today
I took out the center pocket and to my surprise,  there were no wires back
there.  Just a metal silver Hella box with the words "nicht blerfen" (or
something close to that) was there.  So now what's it gonna cost for me to
get these suckers working?  All GT Coupes had these gauges, right?
