Ouch - don't you hate that grinding noise.  It's the cable saying, "OK, 
I'm gonna break now.  Start saving."

We found a used unit for my Quantum and bought it for $125.  The guys 
said we could buy the whole car for $275, but Dad said that was $150 more 
bucks.  It's funny, later I was car 6 in an 8-car no-fault pile-up in 
Atlanta and Dad ended up buying that same car for the front end parts for 
$275.  That after we had paid $125 for the regulator.  You should be able 
to find a non-running (or more common - trashed auto tranny) 4000 for 
around $250 if you look hard enough.  Make sure it has power window 
regulators and go to town.
