Re: 87 Coupe stuff

Mike,

You didn't indicate if the problem was that the starter would not engage, or
if the engine would crank but not start ...

If your problem is the former, it is likely that you have developed suffic-
ient resistance in the solenoid path to prevent it from pulling in when the
start switch is actuated. I'd check the ground terminals between the engine
and the body of the car and possibly look into a new ignition switch module.
What is possibly the case is that you are really postponing the inevitable ...
and that is that your starter is going out. I'm in a similar boat on the '83
urq, I've tried A & B and the car is now working. For me, C will be re-
installation of the heat shield that someone managed to leave off along the
way, followed by the possibility of D, which is the addition of a load reduc-
tion relay to reduce the voltage drop to the solenoid. I have the VW tech
note on that one if you're interested ...

... can you tell that I really don't want to have to pull the starter motor?
I still haven't figured out a good way to get at either of the bolts! I think
mine is starting to make a noise similar to Chris Ice's now .... MOOOOOOOO

... oh yeah, and if it's the latter than you can ignore the former :)

HTH!
