I think that if you mimicked the positioning of the brake lights (one on
either side of the car in the rear window) then you were okay as far as the
German/Swiss regulations were concerned.
I must admit, I really don't know what the exact regulations were, but the
center "Cyclops" type brake lights were *not* considered acceptable at the
time I asked the question...
The most probable reason the US cars were fitted with the "Cyclops" lights
was that most US spec cars had red turn signals, rather than yellow/orange,
and would "fake out" other drivers while braking and using those turn
signals...and I'm sure there *has* been a safety benefit.
