The two-antenna Audis do indeed use an FM diversity antenna system.  I
believe that the rear antenna is FM only, while the front (or power mast, in
the case of some recent cars) is both AM and FM.  That would explain why
using only the rear antenna on a single input radio would result in little or
no AM reception.
