5KCSTQ Fuel Pump

Going through some old archive files, I found a reference (or two) to a bad
check
valve in a fuel pump.  The question is, do I need to remove the fuel tank to
change it?  It looks like I might have to in the Bentley manual and for a
Quattro,
it looks like a lot of work (more than an hour which was mentioned in these
messages).  I can get to the fuel pump through the hatchback of my GTI and hope
maybe I can do the same on the 5K.  Suggestions anyone?

We got eight inches of snow between yesterday morning and today.  This is
definately Quattro weather.
